Joy

Picture
Joy- because life happens and sometimes it's hard to get through the day. We are emotionally, mentally and physically tapped. We grieve. We struggle. We smile and laugh and sometimes we actually mean it- sometimes we don't. We're exhausted. We're hopeful. We try. We encourage others. We encourage ourselves. We listen. We inspire and are inspired. We strive to be joyful, always.

I apply a single drop of Joy over my heart every morning.

Joy is a light, fragrant blend of ten essential oils. This blend brings joy to the heart, mind and soul.

The Limbic System

Having studied Anatomy and Physiology for years, the science behind essential oils and our body's response to them is what interests me most. Listen up...this is good stuff! How can a single essential oil or a blend of essential oils change our mood or state of mind? Can simply breathing Young Living essential oils have physiological and psychological effects? Yes!
The Essential Oils Pocket Reference by Life Science Publishing has this to say about the powerful influence of aromas-

-The fragrance of an essential oil can directly effect everything from your emotional state to your lifespan. When a fragrance is inhaled, the airborne odor molecules travel up the nostrils to the olfactory epithelium or the center of olfactory sensation, then send an impulse to the olfactory bulb. Each olfactory receptor type sends an impulse to a particular microregion, or glomerulus, of the olfactory bulb. There are around 2,000 glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, which receive the impulses from the olfactory receptors and allow us to perceive many smells. The olfactory bulb then transmits the impulses to other parts of the brain, where taste is perceived and where emotional memories are stored, and other parts of the limbic system. Because the limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects.-

Peppermint

Ugh.
We're sick.
Classic cold, complete with sinus congestion, cough and wheezing. We're dealing with a toddler who has Chronic Lung Disease so I'm not in the mood or position to deny medication for respiratory symptoms. He's wheezing so, an Albuterol nebulizer treatment is in order. I'm confident that when he's older and stronger, we will substitute the steroid with a natural remedy for the lung stuff, but not now- not yet.
For our other symptoms, though, we've been bathing in thieves all day and diffusing it- of course- but the star of the day has been Peppermint! We've typically used Peppermint on the tummy for digestion and diffused with Lavender and Lemon for the allergy trio, but today it helped sooth burning lungs and clear stuffy noses.

How We Use Peppermint

For sinus and chest cold symptoms:
I placed a few drops around the shower for a sinus clearing steam shower.
I added 2 drops to the diffuser with 3 drops of thieves during nap time and bed time and, well,  all day really:)
I also made a simple chest rub- 2 ingredients folks!

Stress Away

Picture
Try as I  might, I can't think of one person who doesn't need this from time to time. Stress away is a Young Living essential oil blend. It is included in your Premium Starter Kit, of course, but is also sold in a 15ml bottle or as a roll-on. Your Premium Starter Kit includes a roller ball fitment that you can snap on and make any bottle a roll-on and Stress Away is the perfect one to do that with.

Stress Away is a blend of:
Copaiba- anti-inflammatory, antitumoral,
Lime- uplifting, antidepressant
Cedarwood- improves thoughts, cognition and memory, grounding
Vanilla- yummy aroma and yummy flavor :)
Ocotea- creates peaceful and tranquil feelings
Lavender- improves concentration and mental acuity

Together, these oils are a gentile blend that is great for adults and for children. When I smell it, I get the lime and vanilla right away. It's floral and earthy and scrumptious!

How We Use Stress Away

1. Diffuse 4-5 drops day or night (we diffuse at night to fall asleep fast)

2. Apply topically to wrists, neck and temples
I woke up the other night with a really bad headache and could not fall back asleep. I rubbed one drop of Stress Away on my temples, back of my neck and wrists and within 5 minutes, my headache was gone and I must have been asleep because I don't remember anything after that!  I also rub a drop on the back of our son's neck when he's extra fussy.  He calms down and is much more focused. It's been a lifesaver!
Or try a Stress Away bath!

3. Internal
Drink 1-2 drops in a glass of cold water

Lavender

The Swiss Army Knife of Oils

Lavender is universally regarded as one of the most powerful and versatile essential oils and is often referred to as 'The Swiss Army Knife'

Here's what Young Living says about this amazing oil:

"Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has a fresh, sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma that is soothing and refreshing. Because it is the most versatile of all essential oils, no home should be without it. Lavender is an adaptogen, and therefore can assist the body when adapting to stress or imbalances. It is a great aid for relaxing and winding down before bedtime, yet has balancing properties that can also boost stamina and energy. Therapeutic-grade lavender is highly regarded for skin and beauty. It may be used to soothe and cleanse common cuts, bruises, and skin irritations. The French scientist René Gattefossé was among the first to discover these properties when he was severely burned in a laboratory explosion. Lavender may also be used to enhance the flavor of foods. "

How We Use Lavender

We use this oil all day, every day. It's one of our absolute favorites and we joke about how we ever lived without it. Seriously, how did we? I diffuse it during the day with lemon- 3 drops of lavender and 2 drops of lemon. The house smells amazing. We are calm, focused and uplifted. It's so good!  I've also made a cream (3 ingredients-couldn't have been easier) to support healthy skin when we need it most.  We then diffuse lavender every night in our son's room and then in ours when we go to sleep.  It's the kind of sleep where, you don't remember how you fell asleep and you don't move all night. I used to get up several times a night and am a very light sleeper but since diffusing lavender at night, I have the most restful sleep I've had in years.  It's a game changer, life saver, can't live without it, everyday necessity!
