Boost Your Immunity Naturally!

1/7/2016

The question I get most often, when sharing about essential oils, is "What oils do you use when you are sick and how do you use them?" In this post I will discuss both aspects of this question. I'm going to avoid talking about specific ailments and focus, rather, on wellness and supporting our body's immune response naturally. These simple tips have saved us time and resources and allowed our bodies the rest they need to get and stay well!

The Oils

The majority of the oils you will need are included in your Premium Starter Kit! Awesome, right?! So, if you're currently a wholesale member, you have some pretty heavy hitters already in your oily arsenal. In addition to your Premium Starter Kit oils, Oregano, Melrose and Raven are essentials in the winter months. Current members- now is the time to take a little inventory. If you're running low on your lavender, lemon or thieves, you may consider stocking up. It's also good to note that all of these oils, with the exception of R.C., come in the larger 15ml bottle when ordered individually outside of the kit!! 15ml sizes have 300-350 drops per bottle!! So when you reorder, get ready for your big, beautiful, new bottles to arrive!!
Picture

How We Use Them

1. For preventative and immune support, we diffuse Thieves in every room of the house.  When we are resting and for respiratory support, we like to diffuse any of the following, R.C., Raven or the LLP combo (lemon, lavender, peppermint). We keep the diffuser close and breath in the vapors. Amazing!
Picture
 2. We make a very simple, yet very powerful, roll-on using Thieves and Oregano. We apply it to the bottoms of our feet a few times a day to support our immune systems when we need it most. In this picture, I was making 15 bottles for a Holiday party where we were to bring our favorite thing to gift to everyone. This is, by far, my favorite thing this time of year!! Hope you all go out and make these! The roller bottles can be found on Amazon and are very inexpensive.
Picture
3. Thieves Tea- We make a warm, soothing tea with Thieves, Lemon oil and honey.
Add the following to a mug of warm (not hot) water or warm tea: 1-2 drops of Thieves oil, 2-3 drops of lemon
oil and a tsp of honey. Cinnamon and clove in the Thieves blend go straight to work on soothing your throat.
Drink this as often as you need!

4. Thieves & Oregano Throat Spray-  to a 1oz glass spray bottle, also found on amazon, add 4 drops each of Thieves, oregano, lemon and peppermint. Fill with purified water. Shake and spray 6 sprays into the back of your mouth as often as needed. This is a spicy and invigorating blend!
Picture
5. We add Melrose blend to our neti pot treatments. This makes for an effective sinus rinse! Melrose essential oil blend consists of Rosemary, two types of tea tree and clove. Don't be without this in your neti pot!

We LOVE PanAway!!
This is truly THE oil for EVERYONE! This oil does as the name suggests- "Pain"Away.
We use it for toddler bumps, sore back, stiff neck, muscle cramps and especially after workouts and soccer games. This blend of wintergreen, clove, helichrysum and peppermint is most effective in relieving the aches and pains associated with exercise or chronic discomfort.  I bet you're thinking of a ton of ways you could use PanAway. It's our go-to blend and has taken the place of several over the counter, store bought products-

How to Use Your Everyday Oils- Frankincense Edition

Frankincense

Picture

Studies and personal testimonials suggest that this species of Frankincense is nothing short of a 'miracle oil'. One doesn't have to dig deep to find the countless accounts of healing and cellular health as a result of using Frank. We affectionately refer to this oil as "Frank":) Frank was one of the gifts given to Christ at his birth for it's anointing and healing properties.
Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) has a sweet, warm, balsamic aroma that is stimulating and elevating to the mind. The oils is steamed distilled from the gum resin of the tree.  Useful for visualizing, improving one's spiritual connection, and centering, it has comforting properties that help focus the mind and overcome stress and despair. Frankincense is considered the holy anointing oil in the Middle East, where it has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. More recently, it has been used in European and American hospitals and is the subject of substantial research for it's profound effect on normal cell regeneration. Frankincense is also a valuable ingredient in skin care products for aging and dry skin. The ancient Egyptians used it in rejuvenation face masks. It was valued more than gold in those times and only those with great wealth possessed it.

How to Use Your Everyday Oils- Purification Edition

Purification

Picture
I can not get enough of this oil blend!!
I'm diffusing it now with an extra drop of lemon for an energizing kick. I move the diffuser into each room of the house for about 30 minutes each.
I always think about homes with indoor pets when I use Purification because I know how hard it is to eliminate pet odors from carpets and furniture and the air, even. We don't have indoor pets, however, we do have a busy toddler in diapers and that's kind of the same thing, right? Teenagers who play sports- gym bags- running shoes- work shoes...it's all the same thing, right? Smelly. We all tend to spray some store-bought product that just masks the odor and fills the air with headache inducing chemicals. Have you read the labels of some of those products? Don't. Just stop using them. They contain known carcinogens and have hundreds of toxic chemicals all hiding behind the ingredient labeled "fragrance"- who knew? Now YOU do! Further down, you'll read about our easy and inexpensive natural solution to these toxic sprays.
Purification oil is a blend of Lemongrass, Citronella, Rosemary, Lavandin, Myrtle, and Melaleuca essential oils.  It digests odors instead of covering them up and smells amazing! A couple drops in a load of musty towels will change your life!! It is effective in soothing skin aggravations and is gentile on skin. It takes the sting and swelling out of bug bites too!! This oil is everything an essential oil should be- useful and practical.
Picture

How to Use Purification

Purify the air- Diffusing 3-5 drops, depending on the size of the room, of Purification oils helps clear the air of odors. Rather than masking the odor, Purification actually digests the odor and smells incredible!  Instead of using common household deodorizing sprays (which are full of harmful chemicals) we mix 4-5 drops of Purification oil to a 4oz travel size spray bottle and fill with water to spray on couches, carpets and in the car. Play around with whatever ratio suits your needs:)

Soothe insect bites- Dab a drop of Purification oil directly onto the bite  and the oil will calm down the inflamed blood vessels under the skin that cause the itching. Further, Purification is an excellent bug repellent! The same fabric freshener spray recipe can be used on the skin as a non-toxic bug spray.

Clear skin blemishes with just a dab

Cedarwood and Our Breakthrough!

3/9/2015

Today's post is taking a vacation from our series on the everyday oils. We do have more of the everyday oils to discuss and I'm excited to continue that series, however, today I want to share with you something personal that our family has been going through. If you've followed our posts and/or spent any time with us in the past 2 years, you know that we've been on a unique journey.  We've been learning what it means to have a premature baby and how to work with Doctors, Therapists, Specialists, Teachers and Social Workers to see that he reaches HIS full potential.  It's been an incredible journey, full of triumph and setback. We have learned so much and come so far by trusting our professional team as well as our own intuition.

I mentioned triumph and setback. Since our son's birth, there has been a timeline in place for reaching developmental milestones and goals- much like there is for a full term child only with adjustments allowing for his prematurity and all that comes along with that. He's taken a bit longer to develop fine and gross motor skills, verbal and non-verbal communication and healthy normal function of his brain and body systems. This uphill battle is further complicated by sensory issues and aversions, which are common in premature babies.  Our triumphs have been in gross and fine motor skills, non-verbal communication and cognition- He's smart as a whip! Our setbacks have been in tackling his aversions. Oral aversions are common in babies who were born premature and often are the cause of feeding delays and issues. It's inconclusive exactly why this is, but one can only assume it has something to do with the extensive medical intervention that takes place directly after birth and continues for months- Endotracheal tube used to intubate when on a ventilator, Orogastric tube used for feeding, etc.
Picture
We have successfully hurdled past all feeding issues associated with his oral aversion and now have been focusing on one last issue- Drinking from a cup. For whatever reason he has been terrified of a cup of any kind, no matter how closely it resembles a bottle. He cries- kicking and screaming whenever a cup is introduced. We have no idea why and it's been extremely challenging to make any headway.

I mentioned trusting our own intuition in addition to our professional help. Enter, our new found love of essential oils. We've spent the past couple months getting our feet wet with the Premium Starter Kit and understanding how to use the oils. One thing we've learned- They only work if you use them. We use them, every day and they work! Young Living offers over 100 different Essential Oil singles and blends as well as many other products. We've started to experience oils and other products outside of the Everyday Oils.

This month, we started using Cedarwood. It caught my attention for it's effectiveness with focus and sleep. I've been diffusing it at night with lavender and also rubbing it topically on our son during the day to help with focus. It has other uses that I disregarded. It never occurred to me that he could benefit from the way Cedarwood reprograms the cells and releases old memories- That just seemed like a benefit for someone older with more life experience. What was I thinking?!! He's had more life experience that needs to be let go of than anyone I know! Well, it's been 3 days and today we had a major breakthrough!! Today, he didn't cry and kick and scream at the sight of the sippy cup. Today, he gave the cup a chance. He held it- never done that before. He chewed the rubbery spout- never ever would he do that before. He gave it a chance. He didn't actually drink from it but, for those of you who have seen his disdain for a cup in the flesh, you know how huge this is!! Baby steps. He'd only ever touch it long enough to throw it across the room as far away as possible. Today, it was as if the cup was a long lost friend. I couldn't help but think that he was letting go of old memories that are hindering him. Perhaps memories of being in the NICU on a ventilator- being intubated- having feeding tubes- not to mention the countless other medical procedures who's memories would undoubtedly be stowed away in his tiny developing brain. I can't imagine.

Picture
I was quietly observing from the other side of the room, in complete shock, and I snapped this pic for Dad. I was overcome with emotion. I will never know if he's been held back by trapped memories but I do know that today was a break through for us- for him. These oils work. They do what they say they do. We use them and that has been our experience. Incredible!

Uses for Cedarwood

Picture
According to the Essential Oils Pocket Reference by Life Science Publishing, Cedarwood is also used for hair loss, arteriosclerosis, ADHD, and skin problems such as acne and eczema. When inhaled, Cedarwood stimulates the limbic region of the brain, the center of emotion, and stimulates the pineal glad which releases melatonin. It was found in clinical test by Dr. Terry Friedmann that this oil may help with ADD and ADHD in children. It is recognized for it's calming and purifying properties.

Oh! Did I mention that Cedarwood is on the list of Young Living oils under $20 for wholesale members? It's true.

How to Use Your Everyday Oils- Joy Edition

Joy

Picture
Joy- because life happens and sometimes it's hard to get through the day. We are emotionally, mentally and physically tapped. We grieve. We struggle. We smile and laugh and sometimes we actually mean it- sometimes we don't. We're exhausted. We're hopeful. We try. We encourage others. We encourage ourselves. We listen. We inspire and are inspired. We strive to be joyful, always.

I apply a single drop of Joy over my heart every morning.

Joy is a light, fragrant blend of ten essential oils. This blend brings joy to the heart, mind and soul.

The Limbic System

Having studied Anatomy and Physiology for years, the science behind essential oils and our body's response to them is what interests me most. Listen up...this is good stuff! How can a single essential oil or a blend of essential oils change our mood or state of mind? Can simply breathing Young Living essential oils have physiological and psychological effects? Yes!
The Essential Oils Pocket Reference by Life Science Publishing has this to say about the powerful influence of aromas-

-The fragrance of an essential oil can directly effect everything from your emotional state to your lifespan. When a fragrance is inhaled, the airborne odor molecules travel up the nostrils to the olfactory epithelium or the center of olfactory sensation, then send an impulse to the olfactory bulb. Each olfactory receptor type sends an impulse to a particular microregion, or glomerulus, of the olfactory bulb. There are around 2,000 glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, which receive the impulses from the olfactory receptors and allow us to perceive many smells. The olfactory bulb then transmits the impulses to other parts of the brain, where taste is perceived and where emotional memories are stored, and other parts of the limbic system. Because the limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects.-

Peppermint

Picture
Ugh.
We're sick.
Classic cold, complete with sinus congestion, cough and wheezing. We're dealing with a toddler who has Chronic Lung Disease so I'm not in the mood or position to deny medication for respiratory symptoms. He's wheezing so, an Albuterol nebulizer treatment is in order. I'm confident that when he's older and stronger, we will substitute the steroid with a natural remedy for the lung stuff, but not now- not yet.
For our other symptoms, though, we've been bathing in thieves all day and diffusing it- of course- but the star of the day has been Peppermint! We've typically used Peppermint on the tummy for digestion and diffused with Lavender and Lemon for the allergy trio, but today it helped sooth burning lungs and clear stuffy noses.
Picture

How We Use Peppermint

For sinus and chest cold symptoms:
I placed a few drops around the shower for a sinus clearing steam shower.
I added 2 drops to the diffuser with 3 drops of thieves during nap time and bed time and, well,  all day really:)
I also made a simple chest rub- 2 ingredients folks!

Stress Away

Picture
Try as I  might, I can't think of one person who doesn't need this from time to time. Stress away is a Young Living essential oil blend. It is included in your Premium Starter Kit, of course, but is also sold in a 15ml bottle or as a roll-on. Your Premium Starter Kit includes a roller ball fitment that you can snap on and make any bottle a roll-on and Stress Away is the perfect one to do that with.

Stress Away is a blend of:
Copaiba- anti-inflammatory, antitumoral,
Lime- uplifting, antidepressant
Cedarwood- improves thoughts, cognition and memory, grounding
Vanilla- yummy aroma and yummy flavor :)
Ocotea- creates peaceful and tranquil feelings
Lavender- improves concentration and mental acuity

Together, these oils are a gentile blend that is great for adults and for children. When I smell it, I get the lime and vanilla right away. It's floral and earthy and scrumptious!

How We Use Stress Away

1. Diffuse 4-5 drops day or night (we diffuse at night to fall asleep fast)

2. Apply topically to wrists, neck and temples
I woke up the other night with a really bad headache and could not fall back asleep. I rubbed one drop of Stress Away on my temples, back of my neck and wrists and within 5 minutes, my headache was gone and I must have been asleep because I don't remember anything after that!  I also rub a drop on the back of our son's neck when he's extra fussy.  He calms down and is much more focused. It's been a lifesaver!
Or try a Stress Away bath!

3. Internal
Drink 1-2 drops in a glass of cold water

Lavender

The Swiss Army Knife of Oils

Lavender is universally regarded as one of the most powerful and versatile essential oils and is often referred to as 'The Swiss Army Knife'

Here's what Young Living says about this amazing oil:

"Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has a fresh, sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma that is soothing and refreshing. Because it is the most versatile of all essential oils, no home should be without it. Lavender is an adaptogen, and therefore can assist the body when adapting to stress or imbalances. It is a great aid for relaxing and winding down before bedtime, yet has balancing properties that can also boost stamina and energy. Therapeutic-grade lavender is highly regarded for skin and beauty. It may be used to soothe and cleanse common cuts, bruises, and skin irritations. The French scientist René Gattefossé was among the first to discover these properties when he was severely burned in a laboratory explosion. Lavender may also be used to enhance the flavor of foods. "

How We Use Lavender

We use this oil all day, every day. It's one of our absolute favorites and we joke about how we ever lived without it. Seriously, how did we? I diffuse it during the day with lemon- 3 drops of lavender and 2 drops of lemon. The house smells amazing. We are calm, focused and uplifted. It's so good!  I've also made a cream (3 ingredients-couldn't have been easier) to support healthy skin when we need it most.  We then diffuse lavender every night in our son's room and then in ours when we go to sleep.  It's the kind of sleep where, you don't remember how you fell asleep and you don't move all night. I used to get up several times a night and am a very light sleeper but since diffusing lavender at night, I have the most restful sleep I've had in years.  It's a game changer, life saver, can't live without it, everyday necessity!

My homemade skin cream:

INGREDIENTS:
Coconut Oil
Lavender Essential Oil
Melaleuca Alternifolia Oil (Tea Tree)

DIRECTIONS:
Mix 1/2 Cup Coconut Oil with 20 Drops of Lavender and 5 Drops Melaleuca Alternifolia Oil.

Put the mixture into a GLASS container that you can close (I like to use Mason Jars)
Apply a small amount to affected areas or all over- twice daily.

Picture
Lavender and Melaleuca Alternifolia are both included in the Everyday Oils you get with the Premium Starter Kit. To get these two oils, plus nine other Everyday Oils, a home diffuser and more, click here and follow the step-by step instructions at the bottom of the post.
